Jim Corbett National Park is the oldest national park in India which was established in 1936 as the Hanley National Park to protect the Bengal tiger. The famous wildlife conservationist and author Jim Corbett assisted the British government in establishing the region during 1930. Then again in the year 1936, a wildlife reserve area called Hailey National Park was established covering an area of about 300 sq km of this area. In 1955–1956, the place was renamed the reserve area as Jim Corbett National Park. The park was named for Jim Corbett National Park, a tribute to Jim Corbett, and his contribution to the preservation of wildlife as he was instrumental in establishing this park. In 1974, Jim Corbett National Park was selected as the launch of Project Tiger by a prestigious wildlife conservation campaign. In 1991, the entire area of Sonandi Wildlife Sanctuary under its Kalagarh Forest Division was added to its immediate boundary.
According to the Botanical Survey of India, a staggering 600 species of trees are found in the vast area of about 521 sq km of Jim Corbett National Park. These include grasses, climbers, bamboo, shrubs, ferns. This reserve park is rich in diverse flora and includes both freshwater vegetation and alpine vegetation. Sal park forests are very much found in this park which covers more than 75% of this reserved area. The most prominent species in the trees include the names of Sal, Khair, and Siso. The only coniferous tree you will find here is pine. The credit for making Jim Corbett spellbound and attractive goes to the flowering trees which are found in large numbers here. The beautiful trees and plants here attract the attention of the tourists visiting here. In this park, special plants such as kacharan (pink flowers of white tomatoes), semal (huge red flowers), 'forest fire', dhaka (bright orange flowers) are also found.
